ACCESS Visit Addresses Technology Gender Gap

released July 18, 2000

Twenty award-winning teachers from across the country will visit the Alliance Center for Collaboration, Education, Science and Software (ACCESS) on July 24. The teachers, who are taking part in a week-long institute hosted by the American Association of University Women (AAUW), will meet with researchers involved in the Education, Outreach and Training program of the Partnerships for Advanced Computational Infrastructure (EOT-PACI).

Representatives of GirlTECH, an EOT-PACI intiative to encourge girls to pursue their interests in technology and science, will talk to the teachers about the severe underrpresentation of women in technology careers and college programs. The teachers will also be given strategies to help them effectively teach and counsel girls on the using technology and pursuing technology careers.

The visit will include a virtual panel of women from the two PACI partnerships (the Alliance and NPACI) who will talk about their experiences in technology careers, job opportunities for young women in technology, and other relevant issues. All 20 teachers will be involved in AAUW-funded fellowship projects with girls during the upcoming school year.
