Virtual Panels and Speakers to Present at Fall 2000 Internet2 Member Meeting

released September 19, 2000

MegaConference II will use Internet videoconferencing technology to connect sites around the world for the world's first totally virtual conference track at the Fall 2000 Internet2 Member Meeting on 31 October in Atlanta, Georgia. MegaConference I, held in conjunction with the Internet2 Member Meeting in October 1999, joined over 60 organizations around the world in a less-structured demonstration of similar videoconferencing technology.

Internet2 Member Meeting participants will attend the virtual track exactly like other parallel tracks, with the only difference being that all speakers, panelists and chairs will join the meeting from around the world.

In addition, a large virtual audience is expected to join the in-person audience in the meeting room in Atlanta. The entire track, including breaks between formal sessions, will be totally interactive so that audience members anywhere in the world can ask questions of any speaker and speakers may have discussions among themselves at any time.

The day-long conference track will use Internet-based H.323 videoconferencing technology and presenters will be people who use H.323 video technology today as part of education or research. This conference track is paving the way for future conferences to use Internet technology—not travel—to bring together speakers, panels and audiences around the world.

To be part of the audience or apply to present as part of the virtual conference track, register via the MegaConference website at http://www.mega-net.net/megaconference/about.htm.
