EOT-PACI Asks Researchers for REU Proposals

released October 3, 2000

The Education, Outreach, and Training for Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure (EOT-PACI) is asking PACI partners to propose exciting research opportunities for undergraduate students in the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. The program begins its new fiscal year in November.

The REU seeks to allow a diversified group of undergraduate students to work with PACI partners and conduct research in computational science. The program emphasizes the involvement of women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities. Each student works with a research group at one of the PACI leading edge or partner sites. The program is part of the long-term plan to increase experience and develop skills in the next generation of computational scientists.

The program is open to all PACI partners affiliated with either the Alliance or NPACI. Proposals may involve one to three REU students, and the experiences can be for a calendar year, an academic year, or a summer. However, all REU programs that receive funding this year must concluded by Dec. 31, 2001.

Proposals must be submitted by a research project member. That researcher must then work with the student to ensure that his or her research experience is fulfilled.

Proposals that span multiple PACI-supported teams or areas, builds upon established research projects, and provide mentoring and interaction for the REU students, or include women, minorities, and people with disabilities are especially wanted.

During the last year, 35 students worked with 19 research teams as part of the REU program. Applicants this year are strongly encouraged to review last year's winning proposals. Proposals must be submitted to the EOT-PACI REU committee via the Web by Oct. 13. Winners will be notified by Oct. 31. Funding is expected to start in November, but is subject to funding decisions made by the NSF.

See http://www.npaci.edu/Outreach/PACI-REU/ for proposal guidelines, to submit a proposal, or to view past winning proposals. For questions contact Scott Lathrop at scott@ncsa.uiuc.edu, or Ann Redelfs at redelfs@sdsc.edu.
