November 7, 2000
The Video Development Initiative (ViDe) announces the release of its second generation global video and voice over IP backbone service. ViDeNet is open and freely available to all Internet2 members and the advanced networking community at large.
More than 40 prominent research and education organizations worldwide have already started using ViDeNet. Individuals and organizations active with or interested in video or voice over IP are encouraged to participate in ViDeNet.
ViDe (http://www.vide.net/) is a collaboration of universities and members of the advanced networking community working together to advance the state of networked digital video. A major ViDe initiative, ViDeNet (http://www.vide.net/videnet/) is a video and voice-over-IP environment that allows users to communicate with other ViDeNet sites around the globe using any combination of IP telephone, wireless IP phone, desktop videoconferencing, or teleclassroom systems. ViDeNet supports legacy technologies such as traditional telephones, fax, cellular phones, and H.320 videoconferencing as well. By supplying participating sites with a common, standardized set of interconnection tools and protocols, ViDeNet creates interconnected "zones" that are autonomously operated by the participating organizations, yet connect together to form a global communications network.
