June 11, 2002
The next 2002 Faculty Fellows Brown Bag lecture will be Wednesday, June 19, from noon to 1 p.m. in room 4269 of the Beckman Institute. The presenter will be Praveen Kumar, a professor in the University of Illinois department of civil and environmental engineering.
Kumar will talk about his project, which aims to develop a knowledge discovery system for hydroclimatological studies. The work has three goals: development of a data warehouse for variables that remain the same over time, such as elevation and soil compositions, and variables that change over time; development of concept hierarchies; and development of a knowledge discovery in databases application. The overall goal is to develop a system for analyzing relationships and patterns in observational data to answer important scientific questions.
Pizza and bottled water will be provided at the talk on a first-come, first-served basis. Those unable to attend the lecture at Beckman may view the presentation via webcast at http://realvideo.ncsa.uiuc.edu/kumar/.
The Faculty Fellows program works to extend opportunities in advanced computing and information technology to faculty on the U of I campus. In addition to financial support, Faculty Fellows have access to NCSA's high-performance computers, visualization and virtual reality environments, and opportunities to collaborate with colleagues at NCSA and at Alliance partner sites. The fellowships run for the 2002-2003 academic year.
