Brown Bag Lecture Looks at Causes of Obesity

released June 25, 2002

The next 2002 Faculty Fellows Brown Bag lecture will be Wednesday, July 10, from noon to 1 p.m. in room 4269 of the Beckman Institute. The presenter will be Weimo Zhu, an associate professor of kinesiology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Zhu will talk about his project, titled "Data Mining of Hierarchical Determinants of the Obesity Epidemic." The project uses data mining and a new computer-based analytical method to examine the hierarchical determinants of the obesity epidemic in the U.S. The project connects and mines data from several major national databases, including the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, and the National Personal Transportation Survey.

Pizza and bottled water will be provided at the talk on a first-come, first-served basis. Those unable to attend the lecture at Beckman may view the presentation via webcast at http://realvideo.ncsa.uiuc.edu/zhu/.

The Faculty Fellows program works to extend opportunities in advanced computing and information technology to faculty on the U of I campus. In addition to financial support, Faculty Fellows have access to NCSA's high-performance computers, visualization and virtual reality environments, and opportunities to collaborate with colleagues at NCSA and at Alliance partner sites. The fellowships run for the 2002-2003 academic year.
