Lathrop Named Associate Director for NCSA's EOT Division

released February 25, 2003

NCSA has named Scott Lathrop associate director of its Education, Outreach, and Training Division.

Lathrop, a 17-year employee of NCSA, earned his B.A. in mathematics at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York. He came to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 1973, working for UIUC's Computing Services Office until joining NCSA in February of 1986.

As EOT's associate director, Lathrop works with the NCSA EOT team and more than 30 national partners on programs that help people use innovative emerging technologies to understand and solve problems. Lathrop acts as program manager for NCSA's activities with EOT-PACI, an NSF-funded partnership involving more than thirty national organizations focused on education, outreach and training. He serves as the SC2003 Education Program co-chair and co-chaired the SC2002 Education Program. That program assists undergraduate faculty and K-12 teachers with integrating computational science tools, technologies, and methods into their curricula.

In addition, Lathrop is the project manager for NSF's REVITALISE project, which addresses teacher retention and renewal in rural K-12 schools in Illinois and North Carolina through the use of visualization and communication technologies. As a participating member of the European Union-US Transatlantic Activity Group on e-Learning, Lathrop focuses on e-learning and knowledge management systems and collaborations across the Atlantic.
