NCSA's Barbara Kucera, Alliance/NSF EPSCoR liaison, will spend the fall 2003 and spring 2004 semesters at the Center for Computational Sciences (CCS) in Kentucky, temporarily filling the position of center director.
Kucera has many years of experience with high-performance computing at IBM and NCSA. For the past four years she has been the liaison between the National Computational Science Alliance and the 21 EPSCoR (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) states. This position involves the transfer of information technology from Alliance research projects to EPSCoR institutions. She has also been a key participant in the organization of several major conferences, including the annual Supercomputing Conferences. Most recently, she has been a principal investigator of an NSF/EPSCoR grant for "Eliminating the Digital Divide in Underdeveloped Regions," which introduced Access Grid nodes to institutions in almost all the EPSCoR states.
Kucera is filling in for CCS director John Connolly, who will be spending his sabbatical initiating the position of deputy vice president for research at Zayed University in the United Arab Emirates and developing a research plan for institutions of higher education throughout the UAE.
EPSCoR s a joint program of the National Science Foundation (NSF) and 21 U.S. states and territories. The program promotes the development of the states' science and technology resources through partnerships involving universities, industry, and government, and the federal research and development enterprise.
