Director of Initiative in Innovative Computing to speak April 6

released March 28, 2006

Alyssa Goodman, director of Harvard's Initiative in Innovative Computing and a professor of astronomy, will speak from 2 to 3 p.m. on April 6 in Room 1030 of the NCSA Building, 1205 W. Clark St., U.

The Initiative in Innovative Computing is designed to facilitate scientific discovery by investing in scientific research that can, and will, only be done with the help of computers. IIC researchers focus on developing capabilities that are applicable to multiple disciplines by undertaking specific, well defined projects, thereby developing tools and approaches that can be generalized and shared. The IIC: fosters the two-way flow of ideas along the continuum spanning the space between basic science and computer science; trains a next generation of creative and computationally capable scientists; builds linkages between academic researchers and their counterparts in industry; and communicates with the public at large about the kinds of scientific questions that require novel computational approaches.

In her talk Goodman will focus on a set of exemplar IIC projects involving the physical, life, and social sciences, and mixtures thereof.
