Here the secondary quinone molecule (yellow) is bound to the photosynthetic reaction center protein. After it gains an electron, the quinone shifts position slightly to that shown by the red molecule. Although the shift is only about 12-billionths of a centimeter, it may prove important in photosynthesis.
