The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) today announced that ACNielsen, the Schaumburg, Illinois-based supplier of market research and analysis services, has signed on as the center's newest Private Sector Partner.
NCSA's Private Sector Partner Program puts the center's expertise and technological innovation to work on the real-world challenges faced by industry, while enabling companies to reap the benefits of early access to breakthrough technologies. In addition to ACNielsen, NCSA's partners include Boeing Phantom Works, Caterpillar, Dell, Exxon Mobil, IBM, and Motorola Labs.
"These private sector partnerships are a vital part of the University's efforts to commercialize the innovations that are developed in its publicly funded technology research," said NCSA director Thom Dunning. "Collaborations with industry enable NCSA to be an engine for economic development in the state of Illinois."
NCSA offers six levels of partnerships to the private sector. ACNielsen has entered into a three-year Technology Applications Partnership (TAP). TAPs enable Fortune/Global 1000 firms to leverage NCSA's expertise in high-end computing, innovative software and systems, visualization, data mining, and other areas of technology development. The other partnerships are:
- Strategic Technology Partnerships: Designed for IT creators rather than IT consumers, this partnership gives IT firms the capability of working closely with NCSA to develop and evaluate prototypes of hardware, software, and services—providing these firms unparalleled opportunities for early testing of cutting-edge technologies.
- Strategic Industrial Partnerships: Throughout its history, NCSA has worked with Fortune/Global 500 firms in the areas of high-end computing, innovative software, data mining, visualization, security, and other areas of research. With a three-year agreement, Strategic Industrial Partners (SIPs) gain access to NCSA's scientists, programmers, technologies, and ideas in a pre-competitive environment.
- Scientific Computing Partnerships: For firms requiring access to NCSA's high-end computing resources for testing and/or evaluation purposes, the Scientific Computing Partnerships (SCP) is offered.
- Entrepreneurial Initiatives Partnerships: Recognizing the center's mission to serve as a driver for economic development, the Entrepreneurial Initiatives Partnerships (EIP) are designed to provide small firms and start-ups with the same benefits gained by other partners, without the larger commitment required of those partnerships.
- Government Research and Development Partnerships: With this partnership, NCSA actively pursues federal and state funding opportunities with the private sector. Partnerships run for the length of the grant/award and are subject to the terms and conditions of the funding agency.
