Adler Planetarium to Use High-Tech Equipment from TRECC

WEST CHICAGO, IL —
Chicago's Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum will use a high-tech tiled display wall on loan from the Technology Research, Education, and Commercialization Center (TRECC) as part of an exhibit on Gemini XIII that is slated for spring 2006.
TRECC, a program of the University of Illinois that is administered by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), brings expertise, knowledge, and technological innovation to government and to both the public and private sectors of education and business.
TRECC frequently changes the cutting-edge equipment displayed at its DuPage County facility. By lending the computing, storage, and display systems that are no longer in active use to non-profit organizations like the Adler Planetarium, TRECC extends the life of the hardware and extends the benefits of advanced technology.
"The Adler is a highly regarded and popular institution in Chicago, and this partnership represents tremendous opportunities for future collaborations in research and applications," said TRECC technology specialist Jonas Talandis, who arranged the loan to the planetarium.
For the next two years, the Adler will have at its disposal a 16-tile graphics display system that was developed by the NCSA Visualization Division and deployed at TRECC. The planetarium also inherits approximately 4.5 terabytes of RAID data storage technology.
